945AM EDT......Tropical Storm Gustav set to strengthen.
Top sustained winds nearly 60mph.
The storm is over the Haitian Peninsula, moving northwest at 5mph.
The storm is expected to move south of Cuba, resuming a west northwest motion, then a more westerly motion through 48 hours. Gustav is expected to reach Major hurricane status near the Cayman Islands where it will begin to turn more northwest in response to the high pressure system that is expected to remain over the Bahamas. Gustav is expected to move on the western periphory of the high pressure system and move up along an east side of a trough moving out of Eastern Texas. This should steer Gustav in the general direction of Louisiana and Alabama, where urban centers like New Orleans and Slidel could be affected. By the time Gustav enters the central and Northern Gulf of Mexico, Gustav could be a formidable Category 4 or 5 hurricane. It should be noted that Gustav has the capability to disrupt oil supplies in the Gulf of Mexico, sending gas above $4 a gallon. Stay tuned for later statements.
